Mrs. Palmer ENG 3U1-03 17 June 2016 Power, Insanity and Guilt in The Tell-Tale Heart Even if one feels they may have gotten away with a crime, the weight of a person’s conscience cannot be concealed. In someone’s life, too much power and control combined with a person’s conscience in a person’s life can and will lead to an imbalance and perhaps insanity as in the short story â€Å"The Tell-Tale Heart†. Edgar Allan Poe demonstrates how the narrator in this story goes through the greed and need for control, leading to his insanity that results in extreme guilt. The narrator s desire for complete control, particularly of the old man and his evil eye which bothers him so much it leads him to commit his evil deed. He says that he did not have a motive for killing the old man other than his disgust at the man s pale blue filmy eye. He describes the eye as the eye of a vulture and an Evil Eye and he confesses that it frightened him; once he got it into his head to kill the man, he could th ink of nothing else (Bouchard). â€Å"Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees - very gradually- I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever† (Poe 1). He believes that the elimination of the old man, and the successful dismemberment and hiding of the corpse, will ease his extreme nervousness and his madness that will give him complete control over his life within the house. Lady Macbeth questions Macbeth’s manhood in an attempt to manipulate him into doing things that she wants. For instance, when Macbeth is questioning whether or not he should murder Duncan, Lady Macbeth fools Macbeth into thinking about how any real man would commit the murder: What beast was ‘t/ then,/ that made you break this enterprise to me? / When you durst do it, then you were a man;/ And to be more than what you were, you would/ Be so much more the man (1. 7. 53-58).
